SFNovelist Awarded Novels

Novels which passed rigorous criteria and
were judged to be of exceptional writing quality.

A. Purpose

These awards are granted to authors in recognition of writing a novel of exceptional writing quality.

B. List of award winners to date

Title Author Date Awarded
Nano-Genesis Marla Anderson April 14, 2001

C. Criteria

Only novels by members of the SFNovelist writing workshop are considered for this award.

To be selected as an awarded novel, the novel must earn an average overall score of at least 75 points out of a possible 100 points.

Historically, only a minority of novels submitted for judging receive the award. A novel may be entertaining to read, but if it fails to garner a high enough score from the judges, it will not be selected for award.

Rating Form for Award Selection. Version: Sept 24, 2000.
Criteria Max Pts Description
Grammar and punctuation 5 The grammar and punctuation were nearly invisible to me. They did not get in my way.
Dialogue 8 The dialogue was believable and well written.
Characterization 10 I sensed what the characters were feeling without being told.
Science Content 10 The science content was believable and interesting.
Originality 7 Are the elements of the plot and setting creative or derivative? This seemed like a "new" story to me.
Hook on Opening 8 The opening grabbed me and I think it will grab bookstore browsers.
Compelling protagonist 8 I loved the protagonist. I really cared what happened to him/her.
Compelling antagonist 5 The antagonist was believable and I cheered when the bad guy/gal/thing lost.
Page Turner 12 There were places in the story where I just had to read the next chapter. I enjoyed the tension/jeopardy in the story. I was surprised and could not predict all the events.
Emotions 10 I felt strong emotions at points in the story: sorrow, fear, happiness, pain, romance, etc.
Character development 5 People changed in the story, specially the protagonist.
Entertaining setting 7 I liked the setting and wished I could be there more often.
Overall reading pleasure 5 I hated to put it down when I finished. I wanted to tell my friends about this story.
Total Points 100
D. Submissions

Because the evaluation process is done carefully and takes a long time, the committee vote on whether to accept a novel for evaluation. Judging is not done automatically just because the novel was submitted.

The author may not submit the same novel more than twice in any one 12-month period and only after certifying that it has been substantially revised for the resubmission.

E. Judging

Judging is done by at least three members of a select committee within the SFNovelist writing workshop. Only members of the committee who have read the whole novel and voted on it using the rating form are allowed to vote on the award. The author, even though a member of the writing workshop, may not vote on his/her own novel.

F. Privileges

The author of an SFNovelist Awarded Novel is authorized to use the logo of SFNovelist for promotion of the awarded novel, in both correspondence and on a personal web page for the novel. Authors are not allowed to use the logo for any other purpose.

That logo is shown on the upper left corner of this web page and shows an open book, a rocket ship, a ringed planet, and the text "SFNovelist".

G. Certification

I certify that the above novels received the SFNovelist Award.
